Getting there

From LA I take the 210 (Foothill) Fwy E. to the Baseline Road Exit. Then a short distance W to Padua Ave. N to Mt. Baldy Road and up the hill through Baldy Village. Seven sharp switchbacks to the top and you're almost there. The lodge is at 6000 ft.

To reach Harwood Lodge turn right off Mt. Baldy road at the sign to the Zen Center, across from Snow Crest Lodge. It's just before the road splits. Follow the sign to the lodge and parking areas. Parking is free, but on Mt Baldy Rd you need an Adventure Pass ($2/day at Snow Crest ?).

Owned and operated by the Sierra Club, Harwood Lodge is open to members and guests on weekends year round. It's the site of several dance weekends each year.

For those wanting to take a break from dancing, there are many hiking trails in the area. An easy and popular hike is to San Antonio Falls. At the end of Mt. Baldy road, a short distance north of the lodge, is a chair lift to the Mount Baldy Notch ski area. The lift also operates during the summer for sightseeing ($12 round trip; $6 children/seniors).The adventuresome can continue up the trail from the falls, or take the ski lift to the Notch and then hike to the peak along the Devils Backbone. High winds and spectacular views.
